tectec privacy policy

Last updated: August 12, 2026

tectec is a recipe app made by Beside. This policy covers the tectec apps (web, Android, iOS), the tectec browser extension, and tectec.app. The short version: your library is private, we collect what the product needs to work, we don't sell data, and there are no ads.

what we collect

Your account. Your email address (used to sign you in with a one-time code) and the username you pick. Sign-in is passwordless; we never store a password. We keep standard session records per device — when a device last connected, its IP address, and its browser/OS user agent — so you can stay signed in securely.

Your content. The recipes you save (including their source URL and author), photos you import from, images you attach, the books you create or join, and your conversations with Olive. Cook-along progress (scratched steps) stays on your device.

Pages you import. When you import from a link or the browser extension, the page's address, title, and content are sent to our servers to extract the recipe. Page content is used solely for that import and deleted when the import finishes; the address and title are kept with the recipe as its source. The extension only acts when you click it — nothing is captured in the background.

Usage analytics. We use PostHog to understand which features get used — screen views and product interactions, tied to a pseudonymous instance id and to your user id once you sign in. No advertising identifiers, no cross-app tracking.

Crash and error reports. We use Sentry to catch crashes and errors. A report includes technical details of the failure (stack trace, app version, OS) and your user id so we can tell how many people an issue affects.

how ai processing works

Imports, recipe formatting, and Olive run on large language models. To power those features, the content involved — a page you import, a photo of a recipe, the recipe you're asking about, your messages to Olive — is processed by our AI provider (Google Cloud Vertex AI) on our behalf. Under our agreement with Google, that content is not used to train their models. Olive can only read the recipes you ask about; the agent has no write access to your data and takes no action you didn't ask for.

who else touches your data

Only service providers acting on our instructions, and only what each needs:

  • Google Cloud — hosting and AI processing (Vertex AI)
  • Neon — the database that stores your account and content
  • Loops — sends the sign-in code and book-invite emails
  • PostHog — usage analytics
  • Sentry — crash reporting

We don't sell your data, we don't share it with advertisers, and we don't use it for anything unrelated to running tectec.

sharing you control

Everything in your library is private by default. A recipe becomes readable by others only when you create a share link (anyone with the link can read it; delete the share and the link stops working) or add it to a book (members of that book can read it). Your username appears on recipes you share.

deleting your account

Open settings → delete account in the app. Deletion is immediate and permanent: your account, recipes, photos, books you own, book memberships, conversations, and sessions are all removed. Recipes you shared stop being reachable, and books you owned disappear for their members. If you'd rather we do it, email hello@tectec.app from your account address and we'll confirm and delete within 30 days. Analytics and crash data age out on the providers' standard retention schedules.

children

tectec is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.

changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll note it in the app. The latest version always lives at tectec.app/privacy.
